Cheap Horses For Sale: How IRAP Therapy Saved My Beloved Horse From Retirement.
Let me tell you about my horse, Rio. He’s a 14 year old, 16.1 flea bitten gray hunter and he looks like a miniature Percheron. I suspect he’s actually half draft as I’ve discovered Canadian breeders who actually breed thoroughbreds to Percherons to create super calm sport/3 day eventing horses. And, that’s exactly what he is. While not completely bomb proof, he rarely acts up and I cannot tell you what that has done for me psychologically. He has brought me back from being completely terrified over fences to being able to jump around a 3″3′ course without hesitation. He is very well behaved on the trail (He loves to cross bridges, which I think is hysterical.) and everybody who meets him, loves him on sight. (Except for very snooty hunter riders, like our trainer Ali. But, she’s such a great teacher, we forgive her for her youthful insolence.)
Well, this wonderful, adorable, cookie crazy horse starting have serious soundness problems in his right front, late last year. Steroids did not do the job. He became unsound again after just a few months. I was besides myself. Completely and utterly devastated. I have made a commitment to care for this horse for life, but, my hope was to be able to jump him around till he was at least 16. While, given what I paid for him, many in the hunter world see him as one of the cheap horses for sale, but I’ll tell you, you can buy a fairly reasonable car, brand new, out the door, for what I paid for him. And, this is not the time for me to have to buy another horse. But, it’s not just about the money. It’s about the horse. As much as you can trust a hunter, I trust this horse. (Once, when he was recovering, he didn’t get lunged much and the grooms forgot to put cotton in his ears and well, he bucked me off like a rodeo horse. That set me back for about 2-3 months.) But, this horse, when he feels well and he’s worked consistently, is about as close to being a saint as a hunter can be. So, let me tell you how we saved him from retirement. Because this could help you save your horse from retirement.
We used a therapy called IRAP. What is IRAP? Great question. But, let’s back up a little first. The problem with Rio, according to our Veterinarian, is called Osteoarthritis. Rio has Osteoarthritis in the coffin joints in his right front foot. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is one of the primary causes of equine lameness. It’s caused when joint cartilage is destroyed, leaving the horse with inflammation and pain. The most commonly affected areas are the horse’s hocks, knees, fetlocks and coffin joints. Before going the IRAP route, medications like steroids, polysulfated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAG) like Adequan and oral supplements containing glucosamine or chondrotin are usually used.
IRAP, which is an acronym for “Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein,” utilizes a form of progressive gene therapy to fight the Osteoarthritis. Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a type of cytokine and is known to be generated by a wide variety of cells. The immune system secretes cytokine to combat infections. While IL-1 is a critical part of the inflammatory response, it can sometimes act in a detrimental manner, accelerating the deterioration of tissues like those found in joint cartilage. Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP) blocks IL-1 from binding to tissues and inhibits the damaging consequences of IL-1.
The IRAP procedure begins with drawing blood from the horse into a syringe. The syringe is specially prepared with glass beads that stimulate production of the antagonist protein and an anticoagulant. The blood is harvested, incubated and centrifuged to separate the plasma (abundant with IRAP) from the blood. Typically, IRAP treatments are once a week for three weeks and usually, after that time, the horse can return to normal work.
Well, that’s exactly how it worked for Rio. He had shots once a week for three weeks, with 2 days off after each shot. At first, the results were promising, but a bit inconsistent. He’d go sound, then he’d be slightly off, then sound again. We gave him bute to keep him comfortable and kept training as light as possible.
Well, it’s been about 3 weeks since the last course of treatment and the horse is starting to go more soundly than ever. And, he’s being far better behaved. Yes, it is still early days, but, with horses, you take recovery where you can find it. I will continue to write on the subject so that you can share Rio’s trials and tribulations with me.
So, if you have a horse with issues and your vet hasn’t mentioned IRAP, find a new vet who’s well versed on the procedure. And, if you have insurance, make sure to report your horse’s issues to your insurance company so that you can put in a claim for the related costs. Most importantly, remember to hang in there! Because given all the time, money and emotion we invest in our horses, we’re lucky to have such advanced therapies available, when our beloved horses are at a cross road.
Horses & Money: Why That Cheap Horse You’re Considering Buying Can Easily Become A Money Pit.
Horses and money. Asking what something costs when dealing with horses is like asking the price at a fancy restaurant. If you have to ask, you can’t afford it. Because, believe me when I tell you, horses are unbelievably expensive. Last week, my horse’s teeth were floated. The bill? $290.00. My horse started having a chronic problem with his right front foot about 6 months ago and having tried to address it twice with steroidal shots, we had to go to an IRAP treatment, which, fortunately has worked so far. (Irap is a process where the horse’s blood is combined with a virus that helps the afflicted area to heal. Amazing, huh?) The cost for all of this? Around $4,500.00. Monthly board is over $600.00. My trainer is $1200.00 a month, horseshoes are $225.00 every five weeks, etc., etc., etc. Why am I telling you all this when you’re planning on picking up one of those cheap horses for sale on the internet? Because, no matter what you do, these kind of expenses could hit you as well.
There’s one mare in our barn who cribs (Meaning she’s so bored, she bites down on her stable door and sucks in air. It’s kind of like biting your nails for horses.) Because of this terrible habit, her owner has to spend about $1,000.00 a month on special horse ulcer medication. No joke! The mare’s owner was recently told by her parents that the horse has to go. That it’s costing them upwards of $72,000 a year, to keep her. Well, normally, she would be a $100,000 horse. But, with this condition, no one wants to buy her. Great huh?
One of the wealthier owners in our barn has 5 horses. One is her personal show horse, one is a for sale horse, one is a horse she bought as a prospect and then kept so our trainer would have a horse to show over bigger fences, one is completely green and the last one is almost 30 and long since retired. The horse our trainer was riding recently chipped a bone in her left rear leg and, well, it looks like she’s a permanent paper weight.
Another fairly wealthy rider in our barn now owns three horses because, after keeping two so she’d always have something show worthy, one became seriously incapacitated and the other one got a quarter crack in one foot. So, she had a horse dealer in Europe who she trusted send her a cousin of one of the horses she already owned, and, so far, so good.
Am I trying to scare the beejezus out of you? Well, yes and no. I really want to communicate that this idea of cheap horses for sale is so much cow pucky. If you’re going to get involved with horses, you better really, really, really want to do it. As we speak, I am making the transition from having resigned from a position that was no longer going to be profitable to starting a new business. Money has been going out with only a little starting to come in. The future looks bright, but, the stress from having to use my savings to survive, to support a horse with some expensive issues, sometimes makes me wonder if it it’s really worth it. Amazingly, the answer is yes. Life without horses is empty and grey and useless. Nothing is as rewarding as jumping fences when my horse and I are in sync.
The friends that I’ve made at this barn are absolutely priceless. I’m even pursuing some business prospects with a couple of them. Because, when you are at the barn, no matter how many lemons life throws at you, you are in love. With the horses, the atmosphere, the people. You say hello to everyone, whereas you don’t say boo to strangers on the street. It is one of the happiest places on earth, even with the grief we endure when our horses have problems.
So, if you’re horse shopping, make sure you’re prepared to make one of the biggest commitments of your life. 1300 pounds of incredibly expensive, yet enormously entertaining and rewarding horseflesh. It’s kind of like getting married. For better or for worse . . .
Is It Finally Time To Stop Search Through The Cheap Horses For Sale Sites?
Looking through lists of horses for sale is an obsessive hobby for many horse lovers. While millions of people spend their days sneaking peeks at their facebook pages, there is a dedicated contingent of horse lovers who spend their days surfing horses for sale, websites.
That classified horses for sale sites are clearly among the most popular, within the horse loving population, has serious equestrians a bit concerned. How many horses are bought and sold by back yard riders who are not consulting a trainer or veterinarian? How many folks purchase cheap horses for sale only to find the horse unsuitable for riding, dangerous, lame, sick, or much older than the horse was presented as being at the time of the sale? Is a retired race horse the right choice, even if you can get him for free? Would you be best served by a Quarter Horse, an Arabian or maybe a large pony?
Horses are not cars, They don’t have vin numbers. They don’t have accident reports. You can’t “horsefax” them. As someone who owned two horses as a youngster, and is on her second horse as a middle aged adult, I can tell you straight up, that, you need to do your homework. You need to purchase your horse after a lot of careful consideration. And, most of all, you must be prepared to have to sell or donate a horse that doesn’t work out and try again. It can be very difficult to find the right match. But, when you do, it will most likely be one of the most rewarding, intense and important relationships you ever have.
Even as I write this, when I think about the horse I currently own, a 14 year old half-draft hunter/equitation horse named Rio, I want to cry over how much I love him. But, it wasn’t that way at the beginning, due to some human errors made after the horse was purchased. But, with time, some tack adjustments, an amazing trainer and a dedicated training schedule, I have come to realize just how fortunate I was to find this horse. Also, I have to spend some serious money to keep him sound. But, given that he is a trusty-worthy packer (This means he knows his job and jumps around a course well, even when I make mistakes.) and that he was reasonably priced, he is exactly the right horse for me at my current level.

Why This Series About Horses For Sale, Is A Cut Above The Rest.

Cheap Horses For Sale: Sourcing Cheap Horses For Sale In A World Where Cheap Horses For Sale Can Cost Big Time!
Cheap Horses For Sale Fanatics, Please Be Advised: Clicking around through websites of horses for sale is clearly a guilty pleasure for many horse fanatics. While millions spend their days you-booking and face-tubing, there is a fanatical group of horse enthusiasts who idle their days away, online, looking at horses for sale.
That so much energy is invested in scanning classified, horses for sale sites has some experienced horse people somewhat concerned. How many horses are purchased, each year by inexperienced, upcoming riders who are don’t have the resources to of consult a vet or horse veteran? How many people have researched cheap horses for sale and then bought a horse only to find the horse seriously injured, suffering from a variety of illnesses, insufficiently prepared for its intended purpose, or all too commonly, far older than the age stated by the seller? (Thoroughbreds, the horse racing breed of which Zenyatta is a member, have a number tattooed inside their upper lip number indicating the horse’s age and registration information. However, even retired thoroughbreds can be very, “hot,” and may not be the best choice for a brand new or inexperienced rider.)
Keep in mind, unlike most things in our modern world, the details involving most horses’ backgrounds aren’t sitting in a computer, somewhere, There’s no DMH (Department of Moving Horses.) though many purebreds are registered with the corresponding purebred association. Arabians are registered with the “Arabian Horse Association,” Palomino Horses are registered with the “Palomino Horse Breeders Of America Association,” and so on. Unfortunately, you can’t source injury or illness records for a horse you’re considering. As of yet, there is no “Horsefax.” (What an idea!) As someone who has purchased 4 horses to date, it’s important to do your homework before you purchase your next or first horse, and, to be extremely realistic. You need to mentally prepare yourself for a number of outcomes. You might luck into a remarkable horse first time out. And, you might not. If you’re not prepared to accept the fact that horses are a gamble, you may want to lease a horse. Or take lessons or join a group where you pay to ride horses belonging to someone else. Always keep in mind that you don’t have to buy a horse. There are ways to be involved with them without making such an enormous commitment.
Part of what compels me to write this, above and beyond my desire to help people find genuinely solid information on this subject, is the intense love I feel for my own horse, Rio. Rio is a 14 year old half-draft hunter/equitation horse. He was purchased to help me regain my confidence, after an unsuccessful two year effort to bond with my previous horse, Cooper. Cooper was a beautiful, traditionally built Chestnut hunter. But, his downhill build combined with my then bad habits, created an increasingly negative riding experience. Rio is not a traditional hunter in any sense. He is too high headed and not a great mover. But, after some tack adjustments and riding with knots in my reins so I didn’t over-hold to the fences, we have built a solid relationship, riding over fences. So, it can take a failed experiment or two to find the right horse, above taking all the necessary precautions and covering all the bases, as we’ll be discussing in this series. If you compete, finding the right trainer can also be a challenge, but, we’ll save that for another series.
How These Articles About Cheap Horses For Sale Can Help You Minimize Your Horse Buying Experience Grief & Pain.
Speaking quite frankly, there’s an enormous amount of nonsense on the web, regarding the subject of, horses for sale. Well, I’m happy to tell you, this be the real deal. These articles are written from a legal and professional perspective and involve advice and tips from actual equine sales, legal advisors, horse trainers, horse dealers and horse breeders. And, there’s the hard won experience of having actually purchased and owned four horses. to date. (I have been seriously involved with horses both, during childhood and now, as a serious middle aged rider. I currently train with an “A” rated show barn at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.
We’ll be touching on a number of important issues that potential horse owners should seriously consider when scrutinizing cheap horses for sale. If a horse does a Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde after you’ve paid for him, will the seller return your money and take the horse back? Do professional horse trainers use the internet to help their clients select a horse? Should you copy the professionals when buying a horse? Will you need a pre-purchase exam? When purchasing a horse, should you insist on a signed bill of sale? Is it better to buy a horse through an individual, a breeder, an auction site, or a horse dealer?
These are just a few of the questions we’ll be going over in this series. You’ll also see reviews from horse dealers, trainers and horse breeders, across disciplines, breeds and competition levels. We’ll discuss everything from reining Quarter Horses For Sale to Dressage Horses For Sale to Grade Horses For Sale (Horses of no specific lineage) and more. So, once you’re ready to get serious about purchasing a horse, you’ll have some idea of what an experienced horse person would look for and do.
Saddles Saddlery: Saddles Saddlery-Saddle Makers Now Using Advanced Computer Thermographics To Fine Tune Saddle Customization.
With the equestrian world growing more and more knowledgeable, horse people from every walk of life are becoming increasingly savvy about the critical nature of correct saddle fit, for both equestrian and equine. When reviewing saddles saddlery makers are often the best choice for getting solid information about which saddle is best suited to the rider. With so many styles of riding available, it’s important to know if you’ll be chasing cattle, moseying along through local trails or riding a performance horse before selecting the saddle western for example. Saddles Western are available in literally 100′s of designs. You may prefer an endurance saddle, presently one of the fastest growing riding styles among trail riders looking to push themselves and their horses to the next level. With this sports explosive growth, endurance saddles now come in more styles than ever before.
With saddle makers giving more attention than ever to the horse’s solid fit and welfare, saddles saddlery designers are only now starting to really focus on the rider’s well being and proper seat as well. This probably sounds like the opposite of what you’d expect, doesn’t it?
Well, it’s really important and this is why. It is only when we riders are completely at one with our saddle and our horse that we can truly communicate with our horse. And, this is especially important when either the endurance saddle and the western saddle. Western and endurance saddles have got to fit remarkably well given the sometimes hours and even days that some horse and riders spend on the trail. Just ask any cowgirl or boy, no matter how many years they’ve ridden the saddle western, comfort and fit just can never be given enough attention. Saddles western riders are some of the most demanding riders of all. Chat with several saddles saddlery salespersons and really get as well-rounded on the subject as you can, prior to making a purchase.
Truly understand the three major dimensions of intelligent saddle design isn’t difficult. For starters, there are three major dimensions that the saddle fitter must entertain. Namely, Width, Arch and Angle.Width and Arch have the most critical significance in correctly addressing the horse person’s position, posture and comfort.
The saddle design world, while steeped in thousands of years of tradition, is finally benefiting from cutting edge technological advances. But, only a few highly specialized saddle makers have embraced this idea. For instance, one saddle maker uses a computerized pressure pad system to insure that their western & endurance saddles will fit you and your horse like a glove.
.
By using this 3-D system, this saddle designer can insure both one of a kind, superior fitting saddles and that the pressure will be relieved from the rider’s backside. The revolutionary technique allow that saddle designer to build a beautifully crafter and nuanced saddle.
Interview any saddles saddlery provider and they won’t hold back. If they know their field, they’ll tell you it’s the saddle’s “Arch,” or “Curve,” that makes such a big difference in what the rider experiences. The flatter the saddle, the smaller the contact area, the more pressure the rider’s seat experiences. And, pressure is not comfortable. A saddles western or endurance saddle sporting contours that aren’t in sync with the rider’s contours, will create an unpleasant and potentially chaffing and sore inducing ride. You can’t just cover this up with leather or padding filling. Usually a deeper seat, or “saddle pocket” will help support the rider better giving both endurance saddles and saddle western users the feel that can make riding a dream.
Saddles featuring deeper seats can be just what the doctor order if you need to sit an animated trot and look in control. Dressage is a perfect example of this sort of thing. Another example where deeper seats can really help is jumpers. Holding your balance when you come down off a 4 to 5 foot fence can be that much easier when you derriere meets more pocket and less air. Barrel racers are also fans of deeper seated saddles, dramatically benefiting from a deeper saddle western as their horse whips from barrel to barrel during a barrel racing competition.
For the pleasure rider, a slightly raised pommel might actually provide a more comfortable feel for women riders, given their naturally wider hip ratio and gentle pelvic tilt. Men, on the other hand, seem more at home with a slightly flatter western saddle or endurance saddle seat.
With saddles saddlery providers offering such a wide variety of endurance saddles & saddle western styles for you to try, many people do everything in their power to find the best saddle from off the rack.
This can be rather frustrating, slogging through saddles saddlery offerings only to find your horse getting sullen and chafed and you feeling quite the worse for wear. After all, a cheap saddle can be a lot like cheap horses for sale. It looks good on its face and ends up costing you tremendous grief and additional cost in the long run. Knowing this sends people off to a custom endurance saddle or saddles western saddle maker who clearly can help make their horse’s and their own lives better. But, at what cost? What does the person who has combed through endurance saddles or the saddle western catalogues of every known entity do to get the right saddle at the right price?

Endurance Saddles & Riding: Which Endurance Saddle Best Suits Your Needs?
While we normally write at length about Cheap Horses For Sale on this blog, this post is about saddles. As the horse community grows more and more sophisticated, horseback riders from every discipline are becoming more enlightened about the importance of proper saddle fit, for both horse and rider.
When looking at saddles saddlery experts are often best consulted to insure the rider has truly done their homework. There are many different disciplines and it’s important to know which discipline you’ll be riding when picking a saddle western for instance. Saddles Western comes in 100′s of styles, depending on the nuance of your discipline, i.e., pleasure, cutting, finish bridle horse riding, roping etc. The endurance saddle is also currently an enormously popular choice amongst trail riders looking to test themselves. There are more endurance saddles to choose from now than ever before.
Now, while the horse’s comfort and proper fit has become a virtual art among respected saddles saddlery makers, the comfort and welfare of the rider has been given far less attention. Sounds counter-intuitive, doesn’t it? To be able to nurture and train our horses at the best of our ability, we riders also need to be extremely comfortable as well as properly positioned in the saddle. The endurance saddle as well as the western saddle are among those where special attention must be paid to both the comfort of horse and rider, given the long hours and even days some trail rides can involve. Both western and endurance saddles have to really fit and fit well! Talk to any cowboy, even after years of riding, the absolute importance of comfort to those who ride the saddle western can absolutely, positively, never be underestimated. In fact, when discussing saddles western riders have some of the most critical needs of all the disciplines. Consult with any saddles saddlery expert and you’re sure to be given the benefit of their many years of expertise.
To truly understand proper saddle fitting, first let’s start with the three dimensions of saddle fit. They are, 1. width, 2. Arch and 3. Angle. The first two, width and arch, have tremendous impact on the horseback rider’s comfort. A few remarkably sophisticated saddle makers use computer pressure pad systems to test and improve their western and endurance saddles with their patented 3-D fit system, providing both superior saddle fit and relieving the amount of pressure on a horseback rider’s seat. Using this method helps the saddle maker to determine some very important information.
The first thing that comes to light when discussing saddles saddlery and reviewing saddle design, is the seat’s “Arch”. This Arch or “Curve,” dictates the amount of PSI or pressure impacting the rider’s seat. The flatter the saddle’s seat, the smaller the amount of fitted contact with the rider’s seat. Because the contours of the endurance saddle or saddles western do not mesh with the contours of the rider, the rider feels less comfortable. No amount of padding can make up for this design flaw. Conversely, a well designed, deeper seat, that creates a contoured cup or pocket in either endurance saddles or the saddle western can truly help the rider feels both more comfortable and secure.

Cheap Horses For Sale Update: Finding Cheap Horses For Sale-Where Does The Smart Person Start?
Cheap Horses For Sale: Looking through lists of cheap horses for sale is virtually a life affirming, serious hobby for many horse lovers. While millions of people spend their days sneaking peeks at their facebook pages, there is a dedicated contingent of horse lovers who spend their days surfing cheap horses for sale, websites.
That classified horses for sale sites are clearly among the most popular, within the horse loving population, has serious equestrians a bit concerned. How many horses are bought and sold by back yard riders who are not consulting a trainer or veterinarian? How many folks purchase a horse only to find the horse unsuitable for riding, dangerous, lame, sick, or much older than the horse was presented as being at the time of the sale?
What’s really funny about Rio is that in the Hunter/Jumper world, the top horses go for $100,000 to $250,000 and more. And, there’s no real money to be won riding hunters (Jumpers is a different story, top riders do make big money, but, they’re riding over five foot fences, so, they deserve it!,) but hunters, hunters is all about the ribbons. Rio cost me what is the equivalent of a year’s salary for some people, but, within the hunter world, it’s as if I went to a Cheap Horses For Sale website and grabbed a circus horse.
My trainer even calls him the beast. But, I love this horse so much, you can’t believe it. He’s fun, he’s pretty trust worthy and he’s so comfortable both on the ground and over fences, you cannot believe it. So what if he’s not high fashion? I’m having the time of my life with him.

How many people have bought horse only to find the horse seriously injured, suffering from a variety of illnesses, insufficiently prepared for its intended purpose, or all too commonly, far older than the age stated by the seller?
Cheap Horses For Sale: Cheap Horses For Sale-Finding A Good Deal On A Cheap Horse For Sale, Is It Smart To Try Without Help?
Searching through online sites of cheap horses for sale is practically a regular past-time for many horse aficionados. While millions of people spend their days sneaking peeks at their twitter twits, there is a fanatical group of horse enthusiasts who surf their days away, online, looking at horses for sale.
That so much of their time is spent perusing classified horses for sale sites, has some serious horse professionals a bit worried. Just how many horses are purchased by unsuspecting, new riders who are don’t have the luxury of consulting a vet or horse trainer? How many people select a free horse or a cheap horse for sale, not understanding the tremendous potential downside, in such a choice. How many people purchase a horse only to find the horse seriously lame, suffering from ulcers, insufficiently trained for the purpose it was bought, or far older than the seller claimed the horse’s age to be? (One breed of horses, Thoroughbreds, are tattooed inside their upper lip with a number that indicates the horse’s age and registration information. However, thoroughbreds can be very, “hot,” given the main purpose they are bred for, which is, of course, horse racing. Also, while Thoroughbred is a specific breed, purebred means a horse of pure lineage and this can apply to any horse breed.)
Bear in mind, unlike most things in our modern world, the details involving most horses’ histories isn’t sitting in a computer, somewhere, They aren’t registered with DMH (Department of Moving Horses.) though many purebreds are registered with the corresponding purebred association. Hanoverians are registered with the “The American Hanoverian Society,” Quarter Horses are registered with the “American Quarter Horse Association,” and so on. But, they don’t have injury reports you can search for online. As of yet, there is no “Horsefax.” (What an idea!) As someone who has owned 4 horses to date, I want you to know that not only do you need to do your homework before scanning a bunch of horses for sale websites or cheap horses for sale websites and purchasing your next or first horse, but, you need to steel yourself for a number of eventualities. You may find the perfect horse right away. You may need to lease a few horses first, before you make your purchase. You may buy a horse, think everything’s fine, and have behavioral or medical problems surface 6 months after purchase that did not exist before you bought the horse. Horses are a gamble. And, depending on your degree of proficiency and ambition, they can be absurdly expensive. The search terms, “cheap horse,” and “free horse,” are oxymorons on their face. I’m telling you right now, unless your horse is stuffed when you get him, the words, cheap, free and horse are pretty much, mutually exclusive.
